چکیده
The design of robotic systems is a multidisciplinary effort requiring input from engineers and scientist in a variety of fields. Throughout the design process, numerous engineering models are developed to describe the various subsystems that make up a robotic device. We will present a biologically inspired robotic snake as a case study to demonstrate the typical engineering models that comprise a robotic system. Increasingly, simulation tools are being integrated early in the design flow to verify the operation of both individual subsystems and interconnections of multiple subsystems. Co-simulation often leads to difficulty because separate subsystems are often designed in incomparable software packages.

Making Science Fiction an Engineering Reality Using Biologically-Inspired Technologies
For many years, the trend has been to automate processes in order to increase the efficiency of performing redundant tasks. Realizing that some parts are too complex to inspect with a simple automatic system robotic mechanisms were developed to perform the necessary complex tasks. Lab and field scanners have emerged with significant capabilities where manipulators and crawlers were developed fo...

A new four elements compact antenna array is presented and discussed to achieve enhanced phase resolution without sacrificing the array output power. This structure inspired by the Ormia Ochracea’s coupled ears. The analogy between this insect acute directional hearing capabilities and the electrically compact antenna array is used to enhance the array sensitivity to direction of arrival estima...

This paper describes the implementation and modelling of a biologically-inspired collective behaviour. The experiments are concerned with the gathering and clustering of randomly distributed small cylinders. Each experiment has been repeated ve times and carried out in a simulated environment (parametric simulation) and with a group of ten Khepera miniature mobile robots. The simulated and expe...

This paper describes the implementation and modelling of a biologically inspired collective behaviour. The experiments are concerned with the gathering and clustering of randomly distributed small cylinders. Each experiment has been repeated ten times in a simulated environment (parametric simulation) and carried out five times with a group of ten Khepera miniature mobile robots. The simulated ...
متن کاملFrom schemas to neural networks: A multi-level modelling approach to biologically-inspired autonomous robotic systems
Bio logy has been an important source of inspiration in building adaptive autonomous robotic systems. Due to the inherent complexity of these models, most biologicallyinspired robotic systems tend to be ethological without linkage to underlying neural circuit ry. Yet, neural mechanisms are crucial in modeling adaptation and learning. The work presented in this paper describes a schema and neura...
